Nick Jackson chairs Academy Group 16 which covers the full length of Cumbria, from Longtown to Barrow-in-Furness via Carlisle, Penrith and Kendal. He also runs an international advisory business helping his clients to "make international business easy".

Nick started the business in 1995 and undertakes assignments for his cross-sector clients across a broad spectrum of management issues. These include change management, corporate strategy, international business development, multicultural teams, R&D policy, business support services and competitiveness assessments. Nick works in five languages, and clients in the UK, Switzerland, France, the USA, the former Soviet Union, the Arabian Gulf and China have benefited from his expertise.

In 1998 Nick became a director of ShareFair Networks. This company initiated and owns the ShareFair trademark and has managed a large number of successful highly interactive forums for several hundred public and private sector organisations as part of the UK government's best practice programme. As co-founder and chairman of Partners in Excellence, he led the development of the Business ShareFair, a unique cross-sector executive forum for major PLCs including BP, the BSI and GlaxoSmithKline focusing on corporate excellence. Partners in Excellence has also advised on organisational change and quality systems.

Nick has qualifications from Cambridge University, Germany, Belgium and Australia. His early career was as a research scientist in fluid dynamics, nuclear safety, engineering and alternative energy.

Prior to setting up his own business, he built a track record of hands-on senior management in blue chip organisations in Britain, Switzerland, Australia and the Netherlands. In each of these different cultures he was responsible for leading multi-disciplinary teams of specialists through periods of rapid change whilst maintaining staff morale.

Nick became an Academy chairman in 2001. He is valued as coach and mentor to chief executives and managing directors from coast to coast across the northernmost eighth of England.

Nick believes that the best way to give real value to leaders is as a catalyst, helping them to see themselves and their businesses in a new light and by challenging and supporting them. For example, the Academy's ability to attract top class speakers and provide a challenging but informal and supportive environment for peer group learning brings real value to the region's business leaders.
