Gordon is Chairman of new Surrey groups Academy Group 14 and Entrepreneurs Board 8, centred in the Kingston, Twickenham, Walton, Woking and Guildford areas of South West London and Surrey.
He brings to The Academy a wealth of hands on leadership experience gained over 25 years in board level commercial and MD positions in both major multinational PLC and SME companies. With six new members already welcomed to the CEO Forum Group, Gordon is delighted to be chairing upcoming group meetings on January 19th and a "get to know the Academy's CEO Forum" breafast event on thursday 21st January
With a full programme of monthly meetings with expert speakers already in place for the next six months, Gordon is keen to hear from CEO's / MD's and business owners who would like to know more about ACE and take up the opportunity to take part, without obligation, in an Experiential Business Learning meeting for themselves.
Gordon also chairs Surrey's new Entrepreneurs Board 08, ACE's latest half day experiential business learning programme and is currently meeting potential members to add to the group of five founding members who met for the first time on 8th October. Opportunities to attend future meetings on 11th February and 11th March are open for those seriously interested in finding out more.
Gordon believes strongly that while many good companies are built on the strength of great products, strategies and other physical resources, truly great businesses, whether large or small, are defined by the leadership qualities they demonstrate both internally and externally. Great companies demonstrate the ability to first, genuinely understand the needs of their customers, and secondly, to harness the personal leadership qualities of all their people to collectively commit to a business plan and way of working that enables the company, and empowers its people, to meet those customer needs at all levels. Engaging and motivating both customers and staff to willingly buy-in to the company's vision and what it's trying to achieve for them on a daily, as well as long term basis, is perhaps the most critical challenge faced by the modern day CEO or MD.
For the person at the top of an organisation this can be a daunting challenge and, having personally experienced those feelings of isolation and frustration at times in his own career, Gordon believes strongly that this is where the Academy for Chief Executives, by providing its members with pro-active support and assistance through peer group sharing and learning processes, can really make the difference. Indeed Gordon is determined that this will be one of his Academy Group 14's key deliverables to all member CEO's and MD's.
Gordon's personal career has been focused in the FMCG food and drink sector which has framed his belief in the power of brands, particularly premium value added brands, to deliver sustainable business growth and profitability over the long term, even in recessionary times.
After leaving Oxford in 1978 Gordon joined RHM and developed his early career through increasingly senior sales management, key account management and marketing roles in three different group companies before joining United Biscuits to head up the commercial operations of the Terry's Confectionery division in 1988. Gordon's first MD experience came in 1991 when, in the teeth of recession, he was appointed to lead the UK launch of the newly acquired, and then unknown, Tropicana Fruit Juice brand. Over the next thirteen years, under corporate ownership first of Seagram PLC and later PepsiCo, he built the team of people (from two to fifty) who successfully grew the Tropicana brand to become the UK's No 1 Fruit Juice and Top 10 Grocery brand valued at c£150m, while also leading the acquisition of Copella Fruit Juices and further new market entries into Ireland and Scandinavia. While he remains passionate about the brand, Gordon believes the real success at Tropicana was the sustained excellence of the team he helped to create and the commitment of its people to genuinely partnering with both their customers and with each other.
Since 2004 Gordon has held Chairman and Non–Exec positions for two SME companies as well as running his own interim management business focused on providing strategic and practical guidance to a number of SME companies in the food and beverage arena.
Gordon is married to Elizabeth and they are the proud, if at times frustrated, "joint CEO's" of a family of five amazing children who never fail to remind us that constant change is a normal state of affairs, in life as in business, and mistakes are everyday learning opportunities in disguise!
